A study of two websites

I’m going to show you a study of two websites, and the difference in stats. I’be begun to understand the relationship between the content of your website, and the advertiser performance of the people who visit.
Site number 1. All Star Celebrity. This is an old site of mine, that continues to be a horse for me. Traffic is consistent, 4-5k people a day, 13-20k pageviews a day.
I implemented adsense into the site, around a year ago. After playing with the ad positions, blending etc, I’ve gotten the site to a respectable 15-25$ a day in revenue. This is exceptional for an entertainment site, because visitors want to see pictures, not ads. However, the blending is decent, and I follow google’s ad placement rules closely enough to make a nice return on the site.
Site Number 2. Male Superstars. Similar numbers to my other site, as far as traffic is concerned. However, the biggest difference is in how far less the site performs in ad revenue.
The ads are positioned better, in almost every aspect. But guess what? My visitors just aren’t interested in the ads. If I can get 15 clicks a day on the ads, I’m lucky.
So what can I learn from this? My visitors to the Male Superstars website, are of an entirely different demographic than All Star Celebrity. I have a majority of female visitors to one site, and a majority of female visitors to another.
Whoa, hold on a second. Demographics make a difference? Most certainly it does. Female visitors are far less likely to click on your ads. The stats back it up. My stats from the last 2 years back this data up. I’ve held 10 entertainment sites at one time, and dropped all my sites, minus one, because of this fact.
Is there an exception to the rule? If your site is strictly geared towards women, the revenue picks up in a different form. Mailing lists, cpm advertising and memberships.
Women are a very important source of revenue, just not for contextual advertising. I’ve yet to be proven wrong on this issue, I’d love for someone to show me otherwise.
To the female audience visiting the site, I’m not trying to pick on your. You are a savy audience, that the markeing brass has been trying to figure out, for years.

Oddly enough, I was going to post this on a forum. I’ve dumped my female orientated sites, because of this reason.

My wife recently sold her women orientated website because of these issues. Women walk away from commercials when Oprah takes a break, and they avoid anything that interrupts their reading online.
