Smarpriced to the max

May 2, 08:01 AM

Something is happening to my adsense account, and I have to be honest, its never happened to this degree before. I’ve been smartpriced so hard, that my clicks are worth almost nothing at this point.

I know its not just me, I get lots of emails about people who are smartpriced as well. Google tells us, smartpricing is by an account basis, and doesn’t apply to all publishers as a whole. I’m starting to question this, after reading threads from around the adsense community, as the complaint level is higher than ever before.

This will inevitably change, but the disappointment of checking your daily revenue is frightening at times. I’ve had days recently, with 60 clicks, and less than 50 cents in revenue. That’s atrocious, no matter how you look at it. But its not just me, a lot of publishers are struggling with this.

What are the odds that clickthrough traffic on one site, are generating less value than another, on the exact same day? Two different niches, but all domains are smartpriced?

I’ve been smarpriced before, everyone has. However, sometimes its more harsh than others, and it hurts. If it continues, I’ll yank down adsense from a few of my larger sites, for a couple of weeks.

I’ll keep you upto date on the results.

Question. When your clicks are down, do you get depressed? Do you dread opening your adsense account, to see what sort of a day you are having?

Not me. You know why? Because, when my clickthrough rate starts dropping, my earnings start improving. It means I’m getting a more targeted audience for my advertisers.

I can make more money with 50% of the clicks, if they remain at that level for one week. It normally takes a week to level out your smart pricing etc, so don’t panic.

Wait a minute, your still not throwing out MFA’s are you? Made For Adsense sites, are a thing of the past. Google arbitrage is all but over, except for the very elite who have more of a grasp on it than we ever will.

Don’t think your useless MFA’s are killing your income? Shut off the ads for a week, even two. Watch your main sites income double.. or tripple on your popular sites.

Really, is it worth it to you? You have a high paying niche, that generates 1-2$ a click, but you only get 10 clicks a month? All that to bring down your bottom line by 50% ?

This brings me to an email from Scott, in Philly.

Hey, self appointed adsense guru.. what are you talking about? Why would I turn down an extra 20-30$ a month? Why would anyone? My MFA’s are awesome!

Scott, go ahead and lower your bottom line, as well as risk getting kicked from adsense because of your possible 3-400$ a year. Nobody gets anywhere nickel and diming your advertisers. Didn’t we learn this in the dotcom boom?

You need content, and targeted advertisers.

So listen up, don’t get discouraged when your click rate falls. Watch your true earnings for a couple of weeks, I think you’ll be impressed.

A study of two websites

A very interesting thing happened several months ago. Two of my websites have similar traffic, but the profit generated is considerably different between them.
